UHF RADIOS

40 Channel UHF Radios to become obsolete

The committee strongly recommend that all campers have a UHF radio either as a hand held portable or fitted to their vehicle whilst camped at Pandanus Park and especially when travelling the Cape York Peninsula. All communications within Pandanus Park are through Channel 1 UHF - that includes emergency calls.

Cape York Peninsula including Pandanus Park is a remote area so help can be a very long time coming, if at all. A UHF radio will assist in calling for help.

Please note that UHF sets are changing from 40 Channel units to radios with a narrower bandwith and 80 channels. The existing 40 channel units should remain useable until July 2017. Beyond that date only the newer 80 channel units will be supported with the probability that some or all of the repeater channels going to the extra channels which the older 1-40 channel units will not be able to access.

Thus, if you do not have a UHF radio and are planning on purchasing one ensure you buy a set that can be reprogrammed for the 80 channels.

40 channel UHF radios are rapidly reducing in price as the retailers seek to off-load their stocks of what will soon become obsolete radios.

Be aware of this when purchasing a new UHF radio.
